Petronas to be Mercedes GP's title sponsor in F1

OXFORD, England -- Mercedes GP has signed a long-term agreement with Malaysia's national oil company Petronas to become the title sponsor of the Formula One team.

Financial details or the length of the deal were not disclosed in the announcement Monday.

The new Silver Arrows and Petronas branding will appear on the Mercedes car when it makes its track debut at Valencia on Feb. 1 for the first of the preseason tests.

Course planner says F1 deal in place for Rome GP

ROME -- Italian organizers say a deal has been signed with Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone to stage a Rome Grand Prix on the streets of Italy's capital.

Course planner Maurizio Flammini told Sky Italia on Sunday that an agreement with Ecclestone "has already been done and signed" but did not say when the first Rome GP might be held. The 2010 F1 calendar has already been set.

City authorities have been making plans for the race for more than a year and intend to use the city streets as a course, in similar fashion as the popular races in Monaco and Valencia.

Trulli, Kovalainen sign deals with Lotus for 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen will race for Lotus when the Malaysian-backed Formula One team returns to the starting grid next season.

The 35-year-old Trulli had been left without a team following Toyota's exit from F1 last month to cut costs and focuses on its core business.

The signing was "another milestone" for Lotus, which will be one of five new teams next season, Ahmad Shabery said.

Virgin Racing reveals new driver, tight budget

LONDON -- Virgin Racing will operate with the lowest budget in Formula One, chairman Richard Branson said Tuesday at the official unveiling of the new team and drivers Lucas Di Grassi and Timo Glock.

Renault enters partnership to remain part of F1

PARIS -- Renault is staying in Formula One racing after agreeing Wednesday to sell a "large stake" in the team to a private investment firm to keep the cars on the grid in 2010.

After the proposed sale to Luxembourg-based Genii Capital, Renault said in a statement that the two companies would operate the team together. The team will still race under the Renault name, using Renault engines.

Martin finished second in the 2009 Cup standings in his return to full-time racing. That's the difference here. Martin never really retired. He drove in 24 of 36 events in 2007 and 2008.

Lloyds Banking buys stake in F1's Manor GP

LONDON -- The private equity arm of Britain's Lloyds Banking Group has bought a stake in the new Manor GP Formula One team.

Lloyds TSB Development Capital says Manor GP represents an attractive investment opportunity because it is "well-placed to capitalize on the huge commercial opportunities presented by F1."

The company did not give the terms of the investment but The Financial Times reported it to be worth about $16.2 million.

Ferrari's Massa to drive F1 car in coming days

MARANELLO, Italy -- Felipe Massa's return to racing will continue in the "next few days" when the Brazilian driver will get behind the wheel of a Formula One car, Ferrari said.

Massa, who hasn't raced since sustaining life-threatening injuries in a crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July, will drive an F2007 model fitted with demonstration run tires.
